Gas meter conversions complete

Dennis Webb

Dogs might be a little lonelier, but the jobs of Kinder Morgan employees will be safer now that the natural gas supplier has completed installation of automatic meter readers in the Roaring Fork Valley. The installation also could change the days customers’ meters are read and they receive their bills. It also may affect due dates, and the date some customers’ funds are withdrawn from financial institutions under Kinder Morgan’s electronic funds transfer program.Kinder Morgan converted about 25,000 meters in the Roaring Fork Valley and in Eagle County as far east as Edwards between September and November. Transmitters on the meters will provide information via a low-level radio frequency to mobile monitors capable of reading up to 12,000 meters per day.KM spokeswoman Natalie Shelbourn said a Kinder Morgan employee will be able to read all the meters in a city such as Glenwood Springs by driving only a few roads. Snowstorms will pose less of a hindrance to meter-reading, as will those less-than-friendly dogs in some customers’ yards.”Safety was a huge consideration for us when we looked at doing this system,” Shelbourn said. The meters will improve efficiency within Kinder Morgan, but no employees will lose their jobs as a result. Instead, technicians will be free to go out on more service calls, Shelbourn said.”It’s going to allow our technicians to be out serving our customers even more,” she said.In all, Kinder Morgan is converting about 250,000 meters in Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming in a program that started this summer.Contact Dennis Webb: 945-8515, ext. 516dwebb@postindependent.com
