CARBONDALE, Colorado – The only organized celebration planned for election night here is a GNED (pronounced “Gee Ned”) gathering at the Beer Works on Main Street.

Promoted in a blast email invitation, sent out on election day by local activist and planner Bob Schultz, the party is sponsored by the “Group to Not Elect Doc.”

The GNED group was formed in honor of the only candidate who campaigned to avoid being picked by voters to serve on the town board – “Doc” Philip.

“We’re just trying to have fun,” Philip said early on Election Day, before the results were known. “I don’t want to get elected.”

Philip is one of the 10 candidates running for three open seats on the Board of Town Trustees.

“If I get elected, I’m going to throw my votes to Jake and Jane’s goat,” Philip continued, referring to a live domestic goat owned by local residents Lynn “Jake” Burton and Jane Bachrach.

Schultz’s email promised “live election results, beer, and much merriment,” and invited “all candidates and supporters … as we celebrate another peaceful transition to a new Board of Town Trustees.

“There are no losers, only winners in a town election, so let’s all celebrate Doc being a winner by not being elected,” Schultz continued in his email.

“Hawaiian shirts and/or muu muus are recommended but not mandatory,” the invitation concluded.
