If you are tired of that depressing feeling after watching the news, do something different. Do something uplifting.

Generate positive momentum by taking the time to nominate a friend, youth or neighbor for the Humanitarian Service Awards. Someone you know has made a difference for the citizens of Garfield County. Open your eyes to the kindnesses being done every day by ordinary people, people who take action to add value to our communities.

Anyone may nominate anyone who has made a positive contribution to the welfare of Garfield County citizens. However, previous winners of a Humanitarian Award are not eligible for further nomination. A list of previous winners is included on the county website mentioned below.

A strong nomination includes all facets of a nominee’s humanitarian spirit. Let everyone know just how important your nominee is to a wide variety of Garfield County citizens. Each nominee will be individually honored for their work. This information is gathered from the nomination and any support letters. The nominees will also be given copies of the nomination and support letters. So do your homework and make your nomination powerful.

Nomination forms can be found on the county website, Go to the top of the page and click on News, and then on Humanitarian Awards. Download the form, complete it with as much detail as you can, and e-mail to by 3 p.m. March 11. Late nominations cannot be considered.

There are four main categories of nomination: youth, senior, staff and volunteer. A Countywide Humanitarian of the Year will also be awarded. Depending on the strength of nominations, the committee has the flexibility to create additional categories.

Sometimes the nomination bug catches hold and nominators send in a plethora of nominations. This year, the committee will consider only three nominations from an individual or organization.

For more information about the nomination process, please call or e-mail me at the numbers below.

The 21st annual Garfield County Humanitarian Service Awards Dinner will be held April 12. The venue is being finalized, and will be published in the near future. The event is sponsored by the Garfield County commissioners and the Garfield County Human Services Commission.

Nominees will be notified of their nomination, and will be guests of the sponsors at the dinner. All other attendees will be required to pre-pay. Those details will follow, along with reservation details.

This event is not a fundraiser for the Garfield County Commissioners, the Human Services Commission nor any of its agencies.

If you have not been present at a previous Humanitarian Dinner, just ask someone who has attended. That person will tell you it was a night to remember, a night so much goodness was packed into one room. And the event made him happy to be part of Garfield County, which has a brighter future because of those good people.

Be part of the momentum. You’ll find your efforts will lift you to new heights, and you’ll be glad to have perspectives from there.
