Geology tour an uplifting experience

Dear Editor,

Saturday my husband and I had a great experience that we would like to share. We took the geology tour of the Basalt and Aspen area sponsored by the Basalt Recreation Department, and coordinated by Dorothy Howard.

Our guides were Professor Garry Zabel and Sylvia White. We left Basalt Town Hall around 9 a.m. and our group headed out to see the many wonderful sights of this area.

We were provided great handouts which told us about the geologic time scale for the Glenwood Springs area – when the geological events and rock formations occurred in this area, and how they were formed.

We learned about the formation of the Grand Hogback monocline and White River uplift and also about the swamplands and dinosaurs of this area. But, of course, that was 144 million years ago.

We were very interested in the glacier activity in this area and Garry was very informative, right down to having local maps showing the different glaciers and where they ended and made their deposits.

I hope the town of Basalt will do this tour again, as everyone in this area should be lucky enough to get the opportunity to go. Thanks again to Professor Zabel and Sylvia White, you added an enjoyable event to our summer.
