Getting it all wrong about Wal-Mart

Dear Editor,For a couple of days I’ve stewed over your (Heather McGregor) incredibly uninformed and erroneous Opinion in Sunday’s Post Independent.Your litany of lies (or was it ignorance?) needs to be addressed.First, you demonize Wal-Mart for potentially strangling many Rifle mom & pop shops.Did you do any research? Check Glenwood Springs history. Since Wal-Mart opened here there are MORE mom & pop businesses, more sales tax revenues. I currently don’t go to Rifle to shop. So those businesses currently there don’t get any of my money. They might if I choose to go to the new super Wal-Mart. Secondly, you paraphrase a study by Iowa State University Economics Professor Kenneth E. Stone estimating Wal-Mart’s impact on Iowa businesses. You failed to mention that the numbers in the study were related to the downturn in the agricultural industry, not anything to do with Wal-Mart. Did you even think for one second about the numbers you placed in your opinion? You accuse Wal-Mart of driving 293 building supply stores out of business. Heather, Wal-Mart doesn’t sell building supplies.Your opinion Sunday was flawed. And to think for one minute that our Glenwood Springs Wal-Mart doesn’t participate in the community and help those who need it, just goes to show you need get out and actually do a little research before you try and ram your opinions down your readers’ throats.Thank you for letting me vent … WHEW … .I feel so much better.Sincerely,PJ JaycoxEl Jebel
