Girl, woman killed in I-70 rollover

Staff Report

A 10-year-old girl and 20-year-old woman were killed Wednesday morning after a vehicle rolled on eastbound Interstate 70 about four miles west of Gypsum.

At about 6:15 a.m., a Honda Odyssey van being driven by Elsy Cardona, 42, of Thornton began to drift off the roadway, the Colorado State Patrol reported. Cardona overcorrected and the van went into a broadside skid before rolling four times.

Cardona and a front passenger were wearing seat belts and sustained mild to moderate injuries. Three remaining occupants were not wearing seat belts and all were ejected.

A 20-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Two girls, 10 and 8, both sustained severe injuries. They were taken to Vail Valley Medical Center, and then to Denver Medical Center. The 10-year-old died there, and the 8-year-old was in serious condition.

The State Patrol did not identify the car’s passengers in its news release Wednesday.
