Glenwood area has only one rail line

My SideRoss Talbott

The Glenwood Springs area has an incredible number of resources that make it an incredible tourist attraction. The original was the hot springs, but resourceful people have added to that. There are rafting and kayaking the river, mountain trails, hunting and fishing, snowmobiling and skiing, horseback riding, Jeep trips and other ways to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. A recent addition was the tram with the Exclamation Point Restaurant and cave tours. The Alpine slide, zip lines and cliff swing, due this summer, should be exciting additions. For bicycle enthusiasts, the trail that parallels I-70 and the river in Glenwood Canyon is a beautiful and unusual trip.I’m sure there are many I have not listed. There is one exciting potential that has lain dormant but is now on the block. The rail line from Glenwood Springs to Aspen is in the hands of the RFTA board, which is being lobbied intensely by the bicycle and trail enthusiasts. These people have a wealth of options, including the Glenwood Canyon Trail, but there is only one railroad. The Glenwood Chapter of the Railroad Historical Society, which has the museum in the train station, is in a unique position to get some neat things going. The Society already has a switch engine in Glenwood and also a speeder. There are also resources for other rolling stock that could be put on the line.If the rails are removed, they are gone forever. The right of way is wide enough that a bike path could be built alongside the tracks. I appeal to the RFTA board to save this special resource. We can find a way to accommodate both and save the rails. The bikers and hikers have a lot of options, but there is only one rail line.
