Glenwood Canyon rockslide causes minor train delay

A minor rockslide in Glenwood Canyon near Hanging Lake Tunnel Friday morning had Union Pacific Railroad crews scrambling to fix a section of railroad track. The slide, which was 175 feet wide, happened at about 10 a.m., and sent several boulders and smaller rocks onto the railroad tracks, said Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis. The slide did not affect Interstate 70. Rocks broke some sections of rail, while only shifting others, Davis said. “It’s pretty minor,” he said. He said the Garfield County Sheriff’s notified Union Pacific of the slide. At noon Friday, crews were evaluating the damage, and Davis estimated they’d have the track fixed by late afternoon. An Amtrak train was delayed by about an hour, he said, adding that no other trains were in the area and no other delays were expected. “Any rock slides or snow slides around the railroad are not uncommon because it’s a natural activity that’s occurring in the mountainous ranges,” he said. “We place slide fences in many of our areas – warning devices that tell us if something’s coming down a hill.”The railroad’s monitoring system showed that there was a train on the track where there was no train, which pointed to a likely rock slide or other obstruction, Davis said. Twelve trains each day travel the tracks through Glenwood Canyon, he said.
