GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado ” One westbound lane of Interstate 70 is open and one eastbound lane of Interstate 70 is expected to open soon after a semi-truck rolled over and spilled several 36-inch steel pipes into both lanes.

Colorado State Trooper Ryan Sullivan said at about that there were two tractor trailers and one van was involved in the wreck on I-70. He said there were several injuries, but no fatalities as of 7 p.m. The extent of how many people were injured and the severity of their injuries weren’t immediately known late Monday.

The blockage of I-70 seems to have been triggered when a tractor-trailer heading westbound on Interstate 70 at the milemarker 130 just east of Glenwood Canyon, apparently rolled over and spilled the 36-inch pipes it was carrying, said Nancy Shanks, a spokeswoman for CDOT. The pipes then traveled into the median and into the eastbound lanes, causing more accidents.

Fires then erupted in the median and the right-hand shoulder of the eastbound lane, Shanks said. CDOT crews and Gypsum fire crews helped extinguish the fire.

Sullivan also stated wreck started with the semi-truck hauling the pipes, but added the rest is under investigation. The agency’s hazardous material unit did not report to the scene, he said.
