Glenwood FD: Open burn requires permit, and a good dose of caution

It’s dry out there.

As a result, the Glenwood Springs Fire Department has issued a reminder to residents to be careful when they burn. The department already has responded to a number of wildland fires this season and predicts that trend will continue during the balance of spring and summer.

The Glenwood Springs Fire Department requires permits for all outside burns and for the site of the burn to be inspected before it can happen.

The dry conditions this year are not conducive to open burning and the department asks that burns be conducted only as needed and with extreme caution. To conduct a burn within Glenwood Springs or the fire district, the following conditions must be met:

1. A burn permit must be obtained.

2. Fire Department personnel must visit and inspect the area to be burned.

3. Fires are permitted only during daylight hours.

4. Fires will not be permitted during moderate, gusty or high winds.

5. A water supply to extinguish the fire must be available.

6. The fire must be attended at all times.

7. The fire may not exceed six feet in diameter, a size that may be reduced if the fire will be within 25 feet of a structure.
