Glenwood firefighter completes emergency course

Post Independent Writer

Chad Harris of the Glenwood Springs Fire Department completed the National Fire Academy’s Command and Control of Fire Department Operations course earlier this month in Emmitsburg, Md.The course was based on simulations and focuses on the command officer’s responsibility while conducting major operations involving multi-alarm units. The course emphasizes rapid decision making, advanced incident command, command and control, safety, personnel accountability, and communications. The course was part of the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency. The goal of the training is to enhance the ability of communities to manage significant emergencies and disasters, both manmade, and natural. “Homeland Security trains thousands of firefighters, emergency service personnel, government officials and private citizens each year. This training helps better secure the homeland – saving lives, protecting property and enhancing disaster planning, response and recovery across the country,” said Michael Brown, undersecretary of Homeland Security for emergency preparedness and response. “Graduates of these training programs make a major contribution back at home, in communities such as Glenwood Springs,” said Brown.
