Glenwood High students broadcast ‘This I Believe’

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – What do you believe? This open ended question leads to a variety of responses from Laura Hardman’s sophomore English class at Glenwood Springs High School.

Throughout the spring semester, students read and write different selections but Hardman says for many, this is their favorite assignment.

Students in Hardman’s class select their favorite essays and the authors get to record them for broadcast on KDNK. Hardman partners with the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program (AZYEP), a local non-profit organization teaching youth radio broadcasting, to record and broadcast the essays.

AZYEP will broadcast the essays on Monday afternoons at 4:15 p.m. during their youth radio programs on KDNK (88.1, 88.3, 88.5 FM) beginning this week. Each broadcast will air twice through the summer and this fall, and will be posted at kdnk.org.

The following students will read their essays on these dates:

June 22/Sept. 7 – Linda Escheverria

June 29/Sept. 14 – Kenzi Caple

July 6/Sept. 21 – Joseph Ciborowski

July 13/Sept. 28 – Taylor Nicola

July 20/Oct 5 – Eva Reyes

July 27/Oct 12 – Nick Ciani

Aug. 3/Oct 19 – Lydia Claussen

Aug. 10/Oct. 26 – Nick Vichick

Aug. 17/Nov. 2 – Eric Pena

Founded in 2000, the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program’s mission is to develop leadership, multiculturalism and identity for youth by providing training and opportunity in community broadcasting.

“AZYEP provides educational and experiential programs that have lasting positive effects on youth by raising self-esteem and skill levels, as well as building bridges between the Anglo and Latino communities,” according to a press release. “Radio broadcasting promotes lasting cross-cultural understanding by exposure to a variety of ideas and viewpoints from each culture.”
