Glenwood man killed in I-70 hit and run

A 20-year-old Glenwood Springs man was killed Wednesday evening in a hit-and-run accident in Glenwood Canyon.

The Garfield County coroner identified the victim as Gavan I. Brouillette.

The Colorado State Patrol said Brouillette’s 1995 Honda Accord was eastbound on Interstate 70 at 8:30 p.m. when it went off the right side of the road and struck a guardrail near Bair Ranch. Brouillette then got out of his 1995 Honda Accord and was hit by another vehicle, which left the scene, according to State Trooper Josh Lewis.

“At this point there’s no suspects or vehicle identified,” Lewis said. “It’s essentially classified as a hit and run right now.”

The patrol said it’s possible the driver was unaware a person was struck.

The incident occurred near mile marker 130, outside of the stretch of I-70 where construction has constrained travel to just one side of the road.

Gypsum resident Kim Hefty was among those who arrived just after first responders secured the scene. She waited among truckers, commuters and tourists as investigators scoured the area for clues.

“Everybody was very patient and concerned,” she said.

Anyone with any information on the incident or the driver who left the scene is being asked to call the Colorado State Patrol dispatch center at 970-249-4392, or the Glenwood Springs patrol office at 970-945-6198 and reference case #4C152264.
