Glenwood Springs police rescue minor, arrest man wanted on felony warrants
The Glenwood Springs Police Department rescued a juvenile from a man wanted on a warrant out of Texas on Thursday night, a news release states.
Police were told by detectives from Dickinson, Texas that a 17-year-old female was in the company of an adult male wanted on charges related to a shooting and that they were believed to be in the Glenwood Springs area.
“Glenwood Springs Officers were further advised that (Axel ‘Alex’ Herrera) was a suspect in an aggravated assault (shooting) event in Texas,” the release states. “He was deemed armed and dangerous by Texas authorities and there was an active arrest warrant related to the above charge.”
Officers were able to locate the two individuals in a local restaurant around 8:30 p.m. Given the nature of the charges against the man, officers devised a plan to make an arrest and rescue the juvenile outside of the restaurant setting, the release states. An undercover officer surveilled the two in the restaurant and Herrera was arrested by uniformed officers without incident after leaving the restaurant.
“The juvenile was secured and turned over to the custody of the Department of Human Services for protective custody and disposition,” the release states.
Authorities in Texas were notified of the arrest and Herrera was booked into the Garfield County Jail.
“(Glenwood Springs police) would like to acknowledge the assistance of the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol (Troop 4 Charlie) and the Dickinson, Texas Police Department,” the release states. “Successful resolutions to serious crimes such as this do not typically happen in a silo and these relationships are integral in the administration of justice.”
