Glenwood Springs police search for Safeway armed robbery suspect

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – Glenwood Springs Police were searching into the evening Monday for an armed man who robbed the Safeway pharmacy at gunpoint earlier in the day.

According to Glenwood Springs Police Chief Terry Wilson, police were notified at 1 p.m. that a man had entered the grocery store at 2001 S. Grand Ave. moments earlier and approached the pharmacy brandishing a gun.

The gunman demanded the prescription painkiller OxyContin, but no money, and fled the store, Wilson said.

He said police responded quickly and began searching for the suspect. As of 6:30 p.m. Monday, however, no suspect had been apprehended.

“At this time we have neither apprehended or identified a suspect,” Wilson said.

Glenwood Police and Garfield County Sheriff’s deputies were actively investigating the incident, Wilson said.

The suspect was described as a white male, about 5-foot-7, possibly in his 40s, wearing a maroon-colored shirt and khaki cargo pants. Wilson said that the suspect may have also been wearing a reddish-colored wig at the time of the incident.

Police were reviewing surveillance footage to see if they have a good shot of the suspect.

A Safeway official contacted by the Post Independent after the incident declined to comment, and no further information was available at press time.

Police caution people to be aware of anyone matching the description, and to notify Glenwood Police at 384-6500 or call 911 if they see anyone matching that description.
