Glenwood swimmers win meet in Junction

After some long, intensive workouts over the holidays, the Glenwood Springs girls swimming and diving team took first place at Friday’s four-team meet in Grand Junction.

“The girls looked strong and smooth in the water,” said Demons coach Theresa Wagenman, whose team topped Delta, Gunnison and host Grand Junction.

All three Glenwood relay teams qualified for the 4A state championships.

Kierra Kalakewich, Keevyn Scholl, Hannah Grumley and Ashley Roper comprised the 200-yard medley relay squad. Scholl, Grumley, Roper and Rebecca Carcaterra combined on a qualifying time in the 200 freestyle relay and Roper, Grumley, Carcaterra and Kalakewich linked up in the 400 freestyle relay.

Roper, a sophomore at Coal Ridge, qualified individually in the 100 freestyle, clocking in at 57.71 seconds. Grumley qualified individually in the 100 butterfly (1:05.75).

“Aside from the state-qualifying times, we had some great swims by all the other girls,” Wagenman said. “I was extremely pleased with all their starts and turns, which we have been working on, and, most importantly, their attitude. One of the most rewarding things, as a coach, to see is how much fun the girls are having and the improvements they make throughout the season.”

Another highlight of Friday’s meet was the diving debut of Sierra Weast.

“She has never done diving before and, with help from Patty Schaffner, dive coach, she was able to pull it together for this meet,” Wagenman said.
