Golf course scores an eagle hatch

At least two eaglets hatched in a tree at Aspen Glen, the second set to hatch this spring in Garfield County.

Colorado Division of Wildlife district wildlife manager Justin Martens said he confirmed the presence of eaglets on Tuesday morning.

“There’s definitely two; we can’t tell if there’s three or not,” Martens said.

The eaglets are the first in the Roaring Fork Valley since 1973. Prior to that, the last eaglets were born here in 1954.

“We were kind of looking at it yesterday and we saw some fuzzy heads in the nest,” Martens said.

Another nest with eaglets was found just east of Rifle on the Colorado River last week.

The Aspen Glen nest is located near the 10th hole of the Aspen Glen Golf Club. Aspen Glen’s development agreement calls for the hole to be closed if there is a mating pair of eagles living near the hole, because the nest was there decades before the development.

According to that agreement, the hole will be allowed to open on July 1. By then, the bald eagle family should be gone to summer habitat.

Martens said everyone he’s spoken to about the eagles and the hole closure have been very understanding.

“Definitely the folks that I’ve talked to are pretty excited about it,” he said.
