Gordon Lee Williams

Gordon Lee Williams, of Glenwood Springs, died Monday, Oct. 24, 2005, passing peacefully while elk hunting on Basalt Mountain. He was 69. Born on Sept. 8, 1936, in Punxsutawney, Pa., Gordon served in the U.S. Air Force during the cold war, and set a new marksman record for the M1 Carbine. He was a U.S. Forest Service employee, in charge of the Mount Sopris Tree Nursery, producing more than 4 million trees a year for reforestation. In retirement, Gordon served the Roaring Fork School District where he particularly enjoyed driving the kids to sporting and music events, etc., and a volunteer coach for the 4H Rifle team. Gordon and spouse Laurel (Nelson) were residents of the Roaring Fork Valley since 1964. Gordon had a lifelong passion for the outdoors, including hunting and fishing, which he shared with family, friends, and many of the hunters on Basalt Mountain. He is survived by his wife, Laurel Williams of Glenwood Springs; children Rosalie, Steve, and Cindy; grandchildren, Ashley, Brian, and Erica; brother Leland; and sister Wink. A memorial service to celebrate Gordon’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at the First Methodist Church in Glenwood Springs. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the National Rifle Association, the Basalt 4H Rifle Club, or First Methodist Church of Glenwood Springs.
