Grab your skis: Sunlight opens today

Greg Masse

After much anticipation, ski waxing, snowboard edge sharpening and a sufficient amount of snow, Sunlight Mountain Resort is opening for the season today.

The mountain opens at 9 a.m. and the staff is reporting early-season conditions on the hill.

But because of those early-season conditions, the Segundo chairlift won’t be open Wednesday.

“Segundo won’t be opening because nothing on the west side is open,” Sunlight marketing director Turi Nevin-Turkel said Tuesday afternoon.

But if it keeps snowing like it was on Tuesday, the lift shouldn’t be closed for long.

“It started to snow a little in the afternoon. They’re calling for 2 to 4 inches,” Nevin-Turkel said.

So, like Snowmass’ opening day on Saturday, Sunlight could have a powder day to kick off the season.

“I skied it today,” Nevin-Turkel. “The top is in really good shape.”

To best deal with mid-mountain on down to the man-made snow at the bottom, Nevin-Turkel recommends bringing your rock skis.

Early-season ticket prices are $28 for adults and teens, $22 for children 6-12 and under, $22 for seniors 60-69.
