Grace Brown Baker

Grace Brown Baker of Rifle died Thursday, March 18, 2004, while camping in Albuquerque, N.M. She was 82.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 28, at the Congregational Church of the Valley, 6th and Home in Silt, with the Rev. Jim Warn officiating.

Friends and family will gather for a potluck at noon at the church, with the service following at 1 p.m.



She was born Grace Brown Bearne in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Grace C.R. and Percy Bearne. She spent her early years in Michigan, and later moved to California, where she worked as a dietitian for nursing homes.

She married Clarence Russell Baker. He preceded her in death after 50 years of marriage.



She moved to Carbondale in 1993 to open Aunt Grace’s Bed and Breakfast with her sister Mary.

Mrs. Baker was active in her church, and her sorority Laureate Alpha Theta.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Thomas H. Bearne.

Mrs. Baker is survived by sons Kenneth Baker of Oregon, Bradley Baker of Alaska, and Douglas Baker of Silt; by daughters Claudia Baker of Carbondale and Nancy Baker from Aurora; by a sister, Mary L. Haggart of Silt; by six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Congregational Church of the Valley, P.O. Box 396, New Castle CO 81647, for the new kitchen fund.
