Grand Gents rugby team turns away the Hill Stormers

Post Independent staff report
Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado

The Grand Junction/Junior Gents Rugby Club hosted its first Roaring Fork Valley home game last weekend, pummeling the Monument Hill Stormers, 32-7.

The day started well for the Grand Gents when captain Luke Leone (Roaring Fork High School) found a little space and ran right through the defense to score the first try.

Next, the Grand Gents’ Ethan Minnick (Grand Junction) pushed his way around the outside through multiple defenders and powered in to make it 10-0.

Minnick quickly found his second try just before halftime to put the Grand Gents up 15-0.

The scoring continued in the second half when Leone also found his second try. Palisade freshman Chris Valdez converted the kick.

The Stormers gave some fight late in the game when they swiftly cut back through the drifting defense and went in for the try, also converting their kick.

The Grand Gents would have the last laugh, though, with trys from both freshman Matt Williams (Basalt) and sophomore Hayden Quintana (Basalt).

The Grand Gents, with a record of 3-1-1, will host undefeated Cherry Creek in Grand Junction Saturday at 2 p.m. at Dixon Field. A win would likely put the Grand Gents in first place in Rugby Colorado, Division II.
