Grand Valley High School unleashes the Phantom

Show business is murder sometimes, especially when there’s a killer on the loose on the set of a hit soap opera. That premise sets the stage for the Grand Valley High School musical, “Phantom of the Soap Opera,” which opens tonight at 7 p.m. and shows again 7 p.m. Friday night. The musical is a parody of the classic “Phantom of the Opera.”The show features a large cast consisting of almost the entire drama and choir classes in addition to those who joined the crew through an open casting call.”It’s a huge chorus,” said Kimble Klinsman, the drama teacher. “There are a lot of characters. No main character, no star of the show.”He said there are several romantic interests and interesting conflicts between characters. The musical is packed with over-the-top characters and hilarious plots, Klinsman said. He explained that the stereotypical soap opera characters – the old doctor and wealthy matron who wants to marry her daughter off to a scoundrel – are balanced by behind-the-scenes characters. Murder in front of the camera overlaps with murder behind it, which leaves cast members and writers a little short-staffed. The scramble and missing bodies make for some good laughs.”The music is really clever,” Klinsman said. “It’s a really humorous show.”
