PEACH VALLEY, Colorado – Tyler Radel’s 20 points and some stingy defense helped Grand Valley’s boys basketball team to a 59-44 win over host Coal Ridge on Saturday.

“We played some pretty tough defense,” said Cardinals coach Jake Higuera, who credited Dylan Walters and Ian Holloway with stepping up in that department. “Those two guys’ defense really set the tone down low. They did all the little things we needed to do. Those guys were huge.”

Holloway also finished with nine points. Walters had eight for Grand Valley, which improved to 10-8 overall and to 7-8 in the 3A Western Slope League.

Andy Smedra led Coal Ridge with 17 points. The Titans dropped to 4-13 overall and to 4-10 in league.

Grand Valley’s girls survived a scare from Coal Ridge on Saturday, holding off the host Titans, 49-43.

The Cardinals limped out of the gates, scoring just four points in the first quarter. They put up 20 in the second to take a 24-20 lead into halftime.

Tiffany Waugh led Grand Valley with 13 points, followed by Shawnee Young and Erin Vanderpool with 12 apiece.

Tori Verdieck led the Titans with 14 points in defeat. Ashlie Bowles scored 10.

Coal Ridge dropped to 9-8 overall and to 8-6 in the 3A WSL, while second-place Cardinals upped their overall record to 15-3 and their league mark to 12-3.
