Grand Valley’s boys hold on for win over Palisade

Post Independent staff report
Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado

Tenacious defense and a balanced effort on offense propelled Grand Valley’s boys basketball team to a 46-38 win over visiting Palisade on Tuesday.

Trevor Smith hit four 3-pointers to account for a team-leading 12 points as Grand Valley improved to 9-3 overall. Matt Donello added 11 points, Bubby Beecraft nine and Dylan Walters eight.

Beecraft and Smith each hit big third-quarter 3-pointers to help the Cardinals extend a 24-22 halftime lead to 34-29 entering the fourth.

Palisade had to foul in the fourth quarter, and Grand Valley took full advantage. The Cardinals hit at a 12-for-13 clip from the charity stripe in the frame to ice the win.

“That was a good team,” Grand Valley coach Jake Higuera said. “It was good to see us pull through with a lead and outright win it because we took care of the ball and we did the little things right.”

Palisade’s girls erupted for 22 fourth-quarter points to top host Grand Valley, 44-35, on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (5-9) erased a 26-22 deficit with their outburst in the final frame.

Haley Johnson led Grand Valley (4-8) with 13 points. Shawnee Young chipped in with eight.
