Grazing, better judgement could have stopped Coal Seam Fire

Dear Editor,

Now we’re celebrating the Coal Seam Fire. The coal seam has been burning for many years.

Why has it never started a fire before? Think grazing.

What was the primary fuel? Think grass and weeds.

Why was no effort made to stop it at the South Canyon Road? Think fear.

Why was no effort made to stop it at the greatest firebreak in the area (Colorado River, railroad, I-70 service road)? Think bad judgment.

Now we have some of the best standing firewood available. Think oak brush.

What the heck, let’s replant the grass, keep the cows off and stick to structure fire equipment. By the way, there are no elk or deer in South Canyon. They’re all over the Maverick Ranch.

The next burn will get rid of all the ugly black stuff sticking up and we’ll make national news again.

Those who do not learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them.
