GSAR holds wine-tasting fund-raiser

GLENWOOD SPRINGS – The Glenwood Springs Association of Realtors hopes to help new home buyers by drinking a little wine.

The GSAR will host a wine tasting event from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, at the River Valley Ranch Sales Barn to raise funds for its Affordable Housing Program, said GSAR executive Cheryl Burns.

The tasting, called A Toast to Affordable Housing, is open to the public and tickets are $25.

The Affordable Housing Program helps first-time home buyers with a down payment on a home.

“It’s hard to come up with that little bit of extra money for the down payment,” said Amy Luetke, GSAR president, and a broker and owner at the Property Shop. “It helps people who wouldn’t ordinarily be able to get into the market get in,” she said.

The program is focused toward people and families whose income is less than $58,300 a year, said Burns, although each application is considered individually.

The home buyer must be working with a Realtor who is a member of GSAR, and have exhausted all other money loan and gift options to be eligible for GSAR gift, she said.

The Affordable Housing Program will give a maximum of $3,000, said Burns, but most gifts are about $1,500.

Luetke said the program helps about 20 families each year, but could help more people.

“Sadly enough, in the last few quarters we haven’t used up the money,” she said.

“We just want to encourage people to use the fund so we can help more people get into houses.”
