Pete FowlerGlenwood Springs, CO Colorado

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. Will Rinehart, 19, was sentenced to two years of probation and 80 hours of community service for stealing computer equipment from Glenwood Springs Elementary School.Under a plea agreement, he’ll get a two-year deferred judgment and sentence. Deputy District Attorney James Leuthauser and Judge Daniel Petre expressed some concern that Rinehart tested positive for marijuana during the pre-sentence investigation. But given Rinehart’s lack of a criminal record and the fact that he and Garrett Edquist, 18, returned the computer equipment the next day, Petre gave him the opportunity for the deferred judgment and sentence. Rinehart also will be subject to random drug tests and substance abuse evaluation at his probation officer’s discretion. He must also write a letter of apology to the school.Petre said Rinehart seems to have lived an “exemplary” life until the incident, and that he thinks Rinehart will go far if he applies himself. The two teenagers had stolen about $10,000 worth of computer equipment from GSES in December and then turned themselves in the next day. They originally faced charges of theft, second-degree burglary and criminal mischief.Edquist is set for sentencing on April 26.Contact Pete Fowler: 945-8515, ext. 16611pfowler@postindependent.comPost Independent, Glenwood Springs Colorado CO
