Gun bill sets dangerous precedent

Ruth Lubchenco

Dear Editor,

Following is a letter I sent to Gov. Bill Owens, who is currently faced with an NRA-sponsored bill described below. This bill was tentatively approved by our Senate. Obviously, our elected officials need encouragement to stand up to such madness! Please become involved.

Dear Governor Owens:

Please veto SB 25, which would overturn local city and county gun laws in Colorado.

SB 25 violates the practice of granting local control over local public safety issues, setting a dangerous precedent.

SB 25 overturns existing laws. It would repeal Denver’s ban on assault weapons – legalizing the sale of AK47, Uzis and the Tec-9 used in Columbine. It would repeal Boulder’s law requiring gun dealers to keep records on gun sales. In fact, every major city or county gun law in Colorado would be struck down.

Please reject this dangerous bill that takes away local control and overturns existing gun laws.

Sincerely,

Ruth Lubchenco

Glenwood Springs

Editor’s note: Gov. Owens signed SB 25 following the writing of the above letter. The author is the widow of Tom Lubchenco, who was shot to death in Wal-Mart last year by an unknown assailant.
