Gunnison survives defensive slugfest with Coal Ridge

Post Independent staff report
Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado

Defense ruled the day in Gunnison. And, by the slimmest of margins, so did the Cowboys.

After three scoreless quarters of smash-mouth football, Gunnison finally broke through for a touchdown with 4 minutes, 40 seconds to go to top Coal Ridge, 6-0, in a Friday afternoon affair.

The Titans, now 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the 2A Western Slope League, failed to produce points with a pair of subsequent possessions, and the clock ran out on the Titans’ first defeat of 2010.

After last Friday’s 45-19 win over Roaring Fork, Coal Ridge moved up to No. 10 in the Denver Post’s latest Class 2A rankings. That will likely change.

Defensive football continues to be Coal Ridge’s niche. The Titans have allowed a 2A WSL-low 39 points through five games.

On tap for the Titans is a visit from Cedaredge next Friday. Gunnison, now 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the 2A WSL, will be at Grand Valley.

Friday was homecoming for the Cowboys.
