London-trained harpist Elise Helmke performs at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Glenwood Springs Community Center as part of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Glenwood Springs service.Helmke will play Andre Caplet’s “Divertissements pour La Harpe a la Francais” and J.S. Bach’s “Sarabande” from Violin Partita No. 1 and the “Sarabande Double.”She will also discuss whether the link between harps and angels is based solely on the sound of the harp, or if there is a deeper connection buried in religious history. She will review the evolution of the harp, reaching back to early Celtic and Egyptian traditions.New to Glenwood Springs, Helmke began her musical training at the age of five with piano, adding the harp at age 7. She has performed with orchestras in London and in the United States, including studies and orchestral work with the Aspen Music Festival for two seasons. The Unitarian Universalist Congregation meets at 10 a.m. on the first, second and third Sundays of each month at the Glenwood Springs Community Center. Religious education for children is provided concurrent with the adult service. For more information, visit http://www.uucgs.org, e-mail to janandpat@lizardweb.com or call 948-8721.
