Hassig wins Carbondale mayor’s race

Mayoral candidate Michael Hassig defeated incumbent Randy Vanderhurst 523 votes to 382 in Carbondale’s elections Tuesday.

For the board of trustees, three seats up for election, and the winners were incumbent Fred Williams, Scott Chaplin and David Rippe.

Williams received the most votes, with 417. Chaplin received 415. Rippe, a former trustee, received 355.

Incumbents Mark Whalen and Krista Paradise finished fourth and fifth respectively, with 331 votes and 316 votes.

Rounding out the field were Chris Kelsey with 319 votes, Russell Hedman with 152, Barry Maggert with 80, and Maurene “Moe” Miles with 42.

Erik Mazur, the third candidate for mayor, received 46 votes.

Carbondale has 2,216 active voters, according to Suzanne Cerise, and turnout was just under 50 percent.
