Hayward for mayor in Parachute

Utility lines are rarely a pretty sight. In Parachute, the debate over a water line to serve the new high school turned particularly ugly as school, town and parks officials argued over how best to route the line.

The issue has become the focal point of the mayoral race between incumbent John Loschke and challenger Judi Hayward.

Loschke, a diehard public servant, is accused of conflicts of interest by Hayward, who said she would have steered the issue toward a successful resolution.

Loschke’s real offense is stretching his public service too thin by serving on the school board and the town board, rather than focusing on one job and one role.

This newspaper believes Parachute could be well served by either candidate, but will endorse Hayward. She will bring a fresh perspective and plenty of energy to the town board.

Loschke, meanwhile, should be reappointed to the Planning and Zoning Commission. His experience is too valuable to lose.
