Heavy rains close roads north of Rifle

Torrential rains north of Rifle Friday evening triggered mudslides that have closed parts of Colorado 325 headed toward Rifle Gap. Some Garfield County roads are also affected, according to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Multiple mudslides were caused by storms moving through the area about 6 p.m. The slides contained heavy debris and rocks. Colorado Department of Transportation was on scene and working their way north to clear the debris.

Motorists should expect delays near mile marker 5 with road closure until the mud and debris can be cleared and the road condition assessed, Sheriff’s spokesman Walt Stowe said in a release.

Additional flooding occurred on County Roads 233 and 251 along Rifle Creek, and county road crews were en route.

“Local travelers are advised to use extreme caution in these areas and beware of other arterial roadways in the area that might have been compromised in the downpour,” according to the release.
