High risk traffic stop results in additional charges
The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office released details about a “high-risk” traffic stop conducted by the Special Problem Enforcement and Response (SPEAR) team around 10 a.m. Wednesday on Highway and 24, just east of Hospital Hill Road near Rifle. Deputies from the sheriff’s Office and officers from the Rifle Police Department assisted in the operation.
SPEAR officers observed a vehicle on Airport Road in Rifle, driven by Victor Guzman with Jairo Ortega-Carillo as a passenger. Guzman had an active misdemeanor arrest warrant from Eagle County for a failure to comply and Ortega-Carillo had three outstanding warrants, one for failure to comply out of Mesa County and two felony warrants from Garfield County for failure to comply and eluding.
Both men were taken into custody at the traffic stop based on the outstanding warrants. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered four firearms, one of which was confirmed to have been stolen out of Mesa County. Deputies also found a bulletproof vest along with a small amount of pills, suspected to be made of methamphetamine and fentanyl.
Both men will face additional charges on top of their arrest warrants.
SPEAR is a multi-jurisdictional task force based out of the Garfield County area. Anyone with information on criminal activity is encouraged to reach out to SPEAR through local law enforcement agencies or dispatch at 970-625-8095.
For any questions, please contact SPEAR Board Chairman, Sheriff Lou Vallario at 970-945-0453.
