High-speed pursuit starts in Mesa County, ends near Parachute with arrest of woman

Multiple law enforcement agencies brought a high-speed pursuit to an end Wednesday near Parachute by deploying stop sticks and then arresting the driver, a 40 year-old woman, a news release from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office states.

The Special Problems Enforcement and Response (SPEAR) team, a multi-agency task force in Garfield County, received info from the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office shortly after 9 a.m. New Year’s Day about a traffic pursuit with the driver heading into Garfield County at a high rate of speed, the release states.

“Both the MCSO and CSP discontinued the pursuit in Mesa County due to concerns for public safety as well as the safety of the individuals in the pursued vehicle and the Law Enforcement Officers involved in the pursuit,” the release states.

Members of SPEAR and the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office prepared to engage in pursuit and stop the vehicle. Officers from the Parachute Police Department and Colorado State Patrol troopers successfully used “stop sticks,” which resulted in three flat tires on the vehicle roughly 10 miles after the driver entered Garfield County.

“The female driver, Regina Johnson born 01/05/1984 was taken into custody. She was charged with felony eluding, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and child abuse,” the release states. “There was an 8-year old child in the back seat of the vehicle at the time of the stop that resulted in the added charge of child abuse. Johnson was transported to the Garfield County Jail; the car was impounded.

“SPEAR would like to thank the MCSO, CSP, GCSO and the PPD for their efforts in working together to achieve a safe and successful stop of the eluding vehicle.”
