Hispanics increase nearly 9-fold in Garfield County

Garfield County remains a predominantly white place, racially speaking.

That is, according to 2010 Census data recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Colorado State Demographer’s office.

But Hispanic Americans and other ethnic groups are catching up, according to the census figures, and have been doing so for two decades.

According to data available on the state demographer’s website, the white population of the county grew from 29,148 in 1990, to 39,394 in 2000, to 46,367 in 2010, a growth rate of 59 percent.

Over the course of those same years, the county’s population of those of Hispanic origin rose from 1,673 in 1990 to 7,300 in 2000 and 15,978 in 2010, roughly a nine-fold growth rate (855 percent).

By comparison, the black or African American population of the county was 82 in 1990, according to the census. It more than doubled to 196 by 2000, and by 2010 had reached 385, for a growth rate of 369 percent, or nearly four-fold.

Other ethnic groups within the county are growing, as well, but more slowly.

Native Americans, for example, have increased their numbers from 215 in 1990 to 639 last year, and Asians and Pacific Islanders, as a group, have more than tripled from 124 in 1990 to 416 in 2010.

In the category of “other race or multi-race,” the numbers have grown from 405 in 1990 to 3,665 in 2000 and 8,582 in 2010, which translates to a growth rate of more than 2,000 percent.
