History in Focus: Polo past

This 10 acres south of town on the Roaring Fork River was owned by the Devereux brothers who turned it into a race track and polo field. The building in the center of the photo is the clubhouse. Later, a golf course replaced the polo field. The Glenwood Polo and Racing Association recruited several cowboys in the valley to learn the game of polo since competitors were few and far between and the cowboys became top competitors, often defeating the town team.
