History in Focus: Strawberry Days royalty

This photo shows the 1915 Strawberry Days Queen, Ada Hutchings, seated on her throne with crown in place. Ada was the third Queen chosen during a tradition that started in 1913 with the first Queen being “Ruby” Clarke. Between the years of 1917 until 1947, there were no Strawberry Queen contestants. The reason for that was the prevailing attitude that, starting with the events of World War I, the act of choosing monarchs was distasteful. The crown shown in this photo is currently on display at the Frontier Museum in Glenwood Springs. For a short few years there was even the selection of a Strawberry Days King. Due to lack of interest, that tradition did not survive.
