GLENWOOD SPRINGS Carolyn Cain just wanted to spread a little Christmas cheer.Cain, 55, of New Castle, had never dressed up as a full-on Ms. Claus before this season. However, several years ago she once put on a Santa hat and handed out candy to children at the Snowmass Village Mall. This year shes had several Mrs. Claus gigs in Glenwood Springs and Rifle and even did some holiday-cheer spreading on the streets of Glenwood Springs. It all started when the Community Center asked her husband, Michael, to play Santa at a Dec. 6 customer appreciation event. When they asked him to be Santa, I volunteered to be misses Santa, she said. We did such a good job, even though were amateurs, that they asked us to return for some Christmas parties last week.Cain plays guitar and sings. She sang carols and a Hanukkah song for kids at the Community Center. She was moved when one of the children started singing along with sign language. Cain also played Mrs. Claus at nursing homes in Rifle. In Glenwood Springs on Tuesday, Cain spontaneously made an appearance on Grand Avenue south of downtown in Mrs. Claus apparel. When I went out, there were a lot of people at the bus stop. I just thought I would wish them merry Christmas, she said. I just decided to start waving at the people. She said she even boarded a bus and well-wished the riders. The response was incredible, she said. People were waving and honking and rolling down their windows. The smiles were just infectious. After the initial appearance at the Community Center, Cain embraced the role. Things kind of snowballed from there. She likes playing Mrs. Claus because she feels shes experienced hard times and has been blessed. The economic downturn made her want to spread holiday cheer even more.So many people are struggling just to put food on the table and make it check to check, she said. I just wanted to bring a little Christmas cheer. I just wanted to help them forget the pain and the suffering for a little bit. I was blessed and honored to try to find ways I could bring a smile to someone.Cains Mrs. Claus outfit includes a white wig, a slumber cap with a santa hat over it, white eyebrows painted with water soluble liquid paper, pink eyeshadow on the cheeks, gold reading glasses, jingle bell necklaces and earrings, white gloves and a shawl. When shes not playing Mrs. Claus, she likes playing guitar, leading praise and worship at bible studies or private gatherings, reading and gardening. She definitely plans on playing Mrs. Claus in the future.Contact Pete Fowler: 384-9121pfowler@postindependent.com
