Hospital district board members to have extended term limits

RIFLE – The Grand River Hospital District board of directors hoped to extend term limits with last night’s vote – and that’s what happened.Winning by an unofficial count of 3,081-1,731, the board members will now have three four-year terms. Board members were limited to two four-year terms since the state passed a ballot question requiring two-year term limits on all elected offices in 1992.The special tax district stretches from the area west of New Castle to Parachute and includes some areas all the way to the Utah boarder.”The advantage of extending is that you’ve got a board of elected officials consisting primarily of people who don’t work in the medical field running the hospital district,” said board president Bruce Mills. “The learning curve in the health industry is steep, and extending the limits will allow us to keep that knowledge.”Mills said two of the board’s veteran members would have had to step down in May if the ballot question had failed. That would have left only one of seven board members who has more than two years of experience. There are plenty of people who have vied for a shot to be part of the hospital district board. Last May, 12 candidates ran for four open seats.
