Hot 8 Brass Band will entertain at the Summer of Jazz

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado ” You can’t listen to The Hot 8 Brass Band and not smile ” at least a little.

Loud and feisty, this New Orleans ensemble just puts their hip-hop, jazz blend right out there. During their songs, they whoop and yell, blasting their horns to a strong beat. How refreshing.

Started by tubaist Bennie “Big Peter” Pete in 1995, the group includes a pumping collection of trumpets, drums, trombones and saxophones. Over the last few years, they’ve become a total New Orleans institution, and were featured in Spike Lee’s 2006 documentary “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts.”

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the boys will be spending a few hours at the Summer of Jazz, right here in Glenwood Springs. To find out more about these fellows, make sure to pick up a copy of Wednesday’s paper.
