How anything affects us is up to us

Dear Editor,

This letter is in response to David Petechuk of Rifle.

I will begin by saying I do respect your defense, but I will have to debate a couple of points.

You say that everything we say has an effect on people, and I argue that we choose whether or not something someone says affects us. Your personal feelings do not come from outside yourself. Take responsibility for how you react to words.

Words are powerful enough to override your better judgment? I think not. Words are only symbols, they are not real.

And secondly, I would like to point out that it is only your opinion that words on a T-shirt are not a fashion statement. Others may consider “get down on your **** knees” to be quite fashionable. It’s a matter of personal taste and opinion.

Another point I’d love to argue is, you say what we wear represents who we are? I agree, but I will argue that your interpretation could be a little off. Someone may wear this shirt not because he has bad taste, but for his own amusement. Your over-reaction is reason alone to wear an offensive shirt.

On the subject of innocence, you really exaggerated my point. I never said to corrupt children or to take them drinking in bars. You mentioned pornography in your last letter. Of course you would not expose your children to pornography, but if your child found pornography, would you deny its existence? Or would you explain your feelings about it? Denying reality is ignorance, not innocence.
