How do illegals pay taxes without a Social Security number?

Dear Editor,

In response to the Maria Lopez letter, I would be curious to have an answer to the following:

Since all taxes are collected and remitted to the government based on a valid Social Security number, and since illegal immigrants cannot get a valid Social Security number, who does the employer remit the taxes to? I assume it would be a criminal act if they converted these taxes to their own use.

If the employer does remit the taxes under an invalid Social Security number, how does the government credit them to the proper account if there isn’t one in existence? Or is there a slush fund that they go into that is used personally by the government officials?

In regard to Ms. Lopez’s assertion that an illegal immigrant cannot claim taxes, how do they pay them to the government in the first place if they have no valid Social Security account number to credit them to?
