Howard E. Barnes

Howard Barnes passed away March 20, 2007, at his home in Grand Junction. He was a longtime resident of Carbondale.Howard was born April 5, 1929, in Missouri. He moved to California at the age of 19. Howard married Pat Spence in 1957. He was a Korean War veteran, and while living in Carbondale, was an active member of the American Legion. Howard was a sheet metal worker in California for 25 years. In his spare time he raced motorcycles and later became a tuner for racers as well as a tech inspector for motorcycle races. He developed a quick change wheel and disc brake which was and is still widely used by motorcycle racers. He founded the company Alloy Sprocket Specialties, which built and sold the wheels and brakes that he had developed.Howard and Pat moved to Carbondale in 1985. Howard worked on the motorcycles and snowmobiles of many Roaring Fork Valley residents. In 2006, they moved to Grand Junction for health reasons. He will be missed by all who knew him throughout the Roaring Fork Valley and in the motorcycle industry.He is survived by his wife.A celebration of Howard’s life will be held at a later date in Carbondale.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.
