Hunter found dead near wilderness in Eagle County

EAGLE COUNTY A 57-year-old man was found dead Sunday night after he had been hunting near an abandoned mining town, police said.Mike Castillo, Jr., of Westminster, died Sunday while hunting near Holy Cross City, which borders the Holy Cross Wilderness, police said.Castillos 36-year old son found his fathers body about 8:15 p.m., more than two hours after Castillo failed to meet up with his son and 13-year old grandson.The son tried to revive Castillo through CPR, but was unable to do so. He then left on a horse to look for a cell phone signal and call for help.Castillos death was reported to police shortly after 11 P.M. and the Vail Mountain Rescue Group was called to the area to recover Castillos body.I commend them for keeping calm, attempting to revive him, and, when they couldnt, going for help, said Tim Cochrane, director of operations for the Vail Mountain Rescue Group. That is the proper sequence.Castillo, his son and grandson had rented horses on Friday to take hunting and camping in the Holy Cross Wilderness for the weekend.Sheriffs deputies are investigating Castillos death.Staff Writer Steve Lynn can be reached at 748-2931 or
