Ice on interstate causes accidents

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colorado ” June ice on Interstate 70 caused multiple crashes Friday morning, resulting in one serious injury.

Five crashes involving six vehicles, including a semi-tractor trailer, occurred at 6:30 a.m. just east of the Eisenhower Tunnel, according to Colorado State Patrol spokesman Ron Watkins.

One crash victim in serious condition was airlifted to St. Anthony Central in Denver. The person’s name was not released.

On Vail Pass, three crashes at 5:30 a.m. included a truck that rolled down the embankment into the center median, Watkins reported.

Clean-up finished at 9:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, the Colorado Department of Transportation on Friday morning began replacing the failed culvert under the westbound lanes of I-70 east of Silverthorne.

The interstate began to cave in on Thursday, creating a 4-foot by 6-foot depression.

Traffic was funneled to the left lane, as crews dug up the right and center lanes, causing brief delays on the Silverthorne hill during the day.

CDOT officials expected to shift traffic back to the right two lanes by Friday evening and planned to have only the left lane closed through the weekend until the work is resumed on Monday.

Crews are replacing the old, rusted 24-inch metal culvert with a 36-inch concrete culvert.
