In Tune With Musicians

Editor’s note: Blues guitarist Tommy Castro and his band play at 9 p.m. Saturday at Buffalo Valley Inn in Glenwood Springs. What’s the story behind the title of your latest CD? The title, “Painkiller,” came to me by way of a woman from the Northwest, Lynne Anderson. I met her and her husband after a show one night in Portland, Ore. She told me that she has chronic pain and that our music was a painkiller. I told her that was a great title for a song, and that I might have to write it. The song is about another subject all together.Ever been heckled? Yeah, I told the guy to save his breath, he might need it later on for his inflatable date.Ever break a city or neighborhood noise ordinance? Yes, when I was young I shared a house with some friends, we jammed a lot and had the cops out to the place all the time.If you play any covers, what’s your favorite? “My Time After While,” by Buddy GuyWhich three musicians, living or dead, would you jam with if it could? Muddy Waters, Ray Charles, and Eric ClaptonEver been confused for another blues artist? Yes, Daniel Castro and Jimmy VaughnBiggest influence: B.B. KingMost memorable moment in your career: Either sitting in with Carlos and B.B. or having John Lee Hooker sing on my record – pics of both on my Web site at http://www.tommycastro.com/ph_others.htm.If you had a planet named after you, what would it be called? Tommy’s WorldWhat’s the best part of being on tour? Playing and singing with my band. What’s the hardest part of being on tour? The temptation to eat the cookies that people bring me.
