GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colordado ” A Garfield County Jail inmate hanged himself on Thursday afternoon, according to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Antonio Delgadillo, 25, was found by detention officers around 2 p.m. as they performed scheduled inmate security checks. Delgadillo was being housed in the maximum security unit of the Glenwood Springs detention center on counts of felony sexual assault on a child, a felony count of second degree kidnapping, one count of child abuse, and contempt of court.

He was not under any suicide or behavioral watch, according to a Sheriff’s Office statement. His last known residence was in Silt.

The last suicide to occur at the jail was Timothy James Schilz Jr., of Parachute, in June 2007. Schilz hanged himself with a nylon cord which he removed from a laundry bag, fed it through an air vent and tied it around his neck.

Before Schilz’s suicide, there had been no suicides or homicides since the new jail began operation in November 2001, Sheriff Lou Vallario told the Post Independent in June 2007 following Schilz’s death.

Attempts to reach Vallario for comment Friday afternoon were unsuccessful.

The incident is under investigation.

The jail has been without a commander since Feb. 19 when after Scott Dawson left the position.

No details were released on Dawson’s departure.
