Internationally known math speaker works with Carbondale teachers

Some 95 teachers and parent volunteers in the Roaring Fork School District had the opportunity to learn from internationally known math speaker Marcy Cook during a professional development in-service program on Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday.

Organizer and Carbondale Elementary School teacher Eliza Sorte said having Cook visit Carbondale was “quite an honor” and a “quite a coup to bring her to our small town.”

“She focuses her presentation on how to meet the needs of your students through independent, quality and motivating materials,” Sorte explained.

“She organizes her math lessons to keep things moving and encourage deeper, conceptual understanding of math. At Carbondale Elementary School, we currently use a lot of her materials to differentiate instruction and meet the individual needs of all students.”

Cook spoke to Carbondale primary school educators at Carbondale Town Hall as part of a 2003-2004 Title 1 school improvement grant from the Colorado Department of Education.
