Interscholastic programs good for our kids

Dear Editor,

This letter is in response to Blake Risner’s letter that was in the paper Sunday, April 14, regarding “support interscholastic participation first!” First and foremost, we want to acknowledge Blake for a well written letter that shares our exact sentiments. We truly admire his willingness to take a stand for his words by choosing to take a leave of absence from his responsibility with the Springers Track Club. What positive role modeling this is for our young people that are impacted by him, yet we know his contribution to the program will be missed. Let’s get behind Blake and accept this challenge!

Only in recent years have we, Basalt Middle School teachers/ coaches, felt and experienced the same concerns Blake shared in his letter. We are behind the concept of supporting interscholastic sports first. In a day and age when our world has become so diverse, we need to have a common place for young people to experience community, and for them that is through school and its programs, not just athletics!

With this awareness, thank you for thinking about this concept.
